One of the most common questions new puppy owners ask is how their existing pets will react to a new arrival. Whether you have another dog, a cat, or other animals in the household, the key to success is patience, supervision, and thoughtful introductions.

For your existing pet, the puppy represents a sudden change to their routine and territory. While puppies often arrive full of curiosity and enthusiasm, older animals may need a little more time to adjust to the new dynamic.

Take Introductions Slowly

First meetings should always be calm and controlled. If introducing your puppy to another dog, choose a neutral space if possible and allow them to observe each other without immediate pressure to interact.

Puppies are often eager to play, but older dogs may prefer a slower pace. Allow the adult dog to set the boundaries and step in gently if the puppy becomes too enthusiastic.

Short, positive introductions are far more effective than long, overwhelming ones.

Respect Your Existing Pet’s Space

Your existing pet should always have access to areas where they can retreat and relax without being bothered by the puppy. This might be a bed, a crate, a raised surface, or a separate room.

Remember, puppies are still learning social cues and can sometimes be persistent in their attempts to play. Giving your older pet a place to rest undisturbed helps prevent frustration and allows the relationship to develop naturally.

Supervise Early Interactions

In the early days, all interactions should be supervised. Puppies explore the world with enthusiasm and sometimes with their teeth! Gentle guidance from you helps both animals learn how to interact safely.

Reward calm behaviour from both the puppy and the existing pet. Over time, these positive experiences build trust and familiarity.

Cats and Other Household Pets

Many Cardigans grow up happily alongside cats and other animals, especially when introductions are handled gradually. Allow cats to approach the puppy at their own pace and ensure they have elevated spaces where they can observe safely.

Your puppy should learn that chasing is not acceptable behaviour. Calm redirection and consistent supervision will help reinforce this from the beginning.

Give Relationships Time to Develop

Some pets become instant companions, while others take weeks or even months to build a comfortable relationship. Both outcomes are normal.

With patience, structure, and positive experiences, most households settle into a new rhythm where each pet understands their place within the family.
